Stuart Holmes, director of PSCo, talks to AV Magazine about where he is seeing the advancements of LED used in the retail industry to produce unique and creative display solutions.
- How does LED display technology benefit retail environments? (the key issues re technology one might suggest are scalability, future proofing and reliability)
The benefit of Narrow Pixel Pitch (NPP) LED is that a higher resolution display can be achieved using fewer panels and a smaller display canvas, showcasing content at pin sharp quality, even at short viewing distances. Quality image performance is delivered through three key features: firstly, seamless displays provide one uninterrupted image ensuring there is no disruption to content. Secondly, high brightness gives powerful performance even in challenging, high ambient light environments. Finally, high refresh rates ensure fast moving content is displayed flicker-free without ghosting or tearing. Under camera, high refresh rates can also eliminate the effect of moiré patterns.
The brand new range from Samsung, the IF series, leverages the High Dynamic Range (HDR) scene adaptation technology to add clarity and sophistication to featured content and showcase a detailed and realistic picture. Compatible with various colour gamut settings, it enables the IF Series displays to emphasise brilliant colour expression, perfect for high fashion retail content, where it delivers the true colour accuracy often needed.
Where previously you were restricted to a 16:9 ratio to showcase your advertising, due to the flexibility of LED, we are seeing it being used in more creative and bespoke applications. We have seen it used to form a living canvas to generate animated signage that reflects the styles of the clothes around it; a two-storey mosaic advertising LED wall; and bespoke cashier desks.
- Where does (your company) add value, and why?
PSCo provide full UK warranties and support on all LED within our portfolio, including 3 year, zero pixel failure warranties as standard down to a single pixel. Bespoke service contracts are available to cater for even the most demanding service level agreements. These after-sale services ensure channel partners are supported in the UK, rather than standard Return to Base in China or European offices, providing one point of contact throughout and shortened turnaround times.
As there are so many products available with varying features and pixel pitches, it makes product demonstration and assessment more important than ever. With this in mind, the PSCo Assessment Centre showcases the latest narrow pixel pitch LED display technologies from leading manufacturers in one location; ranging from 1mm, 2mm, 3mm and 4mm pixel pitch including the Samsung 1.5mm and 2mm LED.
- Which solutions are worth investing in, and why?
A large screen display is great for catching shoppers’ attention and showcasing fast moving, colourful and bright content. With the adoption of narrow pixel pitch LED increasing, we are seeing it being used more and more in retail environments. The range of features LED displays offer is akin to a wish list of the perfect large screen installation: no bezels, high brightness, low power, mounting flexibility – all of which are ideal for the retail environment.
